Great museums to check out:

  • Exploratorium: Awesome hands-on science exhibits, hours of fun for kids. -> what, not just kids, my husband and i have a membership, this is super fun for adults too!
  • Palace of the Legion of Honor: In Golden Gate Park. From the site: 'The Legion of Honor, San Francisco's most beautiful museum, displays an impressive collection of 4,000 years of ancient and European art in an unforgettable setting overlooking the Golden Gate Bridge.'
  • de Young: In Golden Gate Park, beloved art museum founded in 1895. Variety of collections from American painting and sculpture to art from Africa, Oceania, New Guinea, the Americas and more. The building alone is worth the trip.
  • Japanese Tea Garden: In Golden Gate Park, serene gardens, the oldest public Japanese tea garden in the U.S. Entrance is $5 for adults, $3 for teens and seniors, $1.50 for kids. Wikipedia page.
  • Asian Art Museum: Near City Hall, Downtown. From the site: 'The Asian Art Museum of San Francisco is one of the largest museums in the Western world devoted exclusively to Asian art. But we are more than just an art museum—we are your ticket to Asia. Here, you can travel through 6,000 years of history, trek across seven major regions, and sample the cultures of numerous countries.'
  • SF MoMA: Adjacent to Yerba Buena Gardens in the SOMA district. From the site: 'Founded in 1935, SFMOMA was the first museum on the West Coast devoted to modern and contemporary art. From the outset, the museum has championed the most innovative and challenging art of its time, and we continue to exhibit and collect work by both modern masters and younger, less-established artists.'
  • Lawrence Hall of Science: a public science center featuring hands-on exhibits and activities. Located in the hills above the University of California, Berkeley campus, LHS is also a resource center for preschool through high school science and mathematics education.
  • Museum of the African Diaspora: a multi-disciplinary museum that strives to "connect all people through the art, culture, and history of the African diaspora." In addition to their exhibitions, MoAD is known for a wide range of Salons and other public events.
