[edit] Housing

  • Studio: $900 on the extreme low end, for less desirable neighborhoods (aka, "sketchy" areas - such as the Tenderloin) or efficiency units. $1,100-$1,600 is mid-range, and can be found in most neighborhoods. Above $1,700 (yes, for just a studio!) are places in "hip" neighborhoods or with lots of ammenities, in newly built apartment buildings, for example.
  • 1 bedroom: $1,400-$2,000 is mid range and can be found in most neighborhoods
  • Sharing 2 bedroom: $2,000-$2,700 is mid-range
  • Multiple roommates: You get more ammenities if you are willing to live with roommates. Per person, rents are as follows: Low end: $600-$700, mid-range: $800-$1,200, high-end: $1,500+ You can find a very nice room in an apartment or house if you have multiple roommates, with access to a full kitchen, perhaps a living room, and a desirable neighborhood for even just $700. Compare that to $900 for an efficiency studio in the Tenderloin, and you can understand why so many renters have roommates!

[edit] Other expenses

  • Power bill: (on average?) We don't have steam heat, so we have to use electric room heaters, and our electric bills range between $30 and $80 or so. I have friends who have steam heat, and they're apartments have always been warm and cozy...so I would recommend getting a place with steam heat.
  • Water: Usually included in rent
  • Gas:
  • Phone:
  • Internet:$50/month
  • Cable:
  • Cell phone:

[edit] Other expenses

  • Power bill: (on average?)
  • Water:
  • Natural gas:
  • Phone:
  • Internet:
  • Cable:
  • Cell phone:
  • Gas for car/month:
  • Public Transportation: $2.00 per bus ride if paying as you go. Children and seniors are slightly cheaper. BART would cost about $250/month to take twice a day if you commute to work in the city of San Francisco and live in the east bay, or vice versa. Cable car rides are $5.00 for one-way rides, but the city-wide bus passes also work on them.

Starting Jan 1, 2010, monthly muni pass (fast pass) for adults increase to 60$ (I know expensive). Those who want to use muni AND BART (Bart in San Francisco only) will have to pay 70$ to purchase the muni pass Prenium.
