[edit] Film

  • Roxie Theater is a cool theatre. From the page: 'The Roxie is San Francisco's oldest continually operating theater; turning 100 in 2009. It has been functioning as an independent arthouse theater since the 1970s, showing the best of art, music, foreign and documentary films.'
  • Castro Theater: Historic theater built in 1922, known for its atmosphere, classic films, and an organist who plays before the shows.
  • Red Vic Movie House: Locally owned, run by a collective, known for plush couches, popcorn in wooden bowls (you can top with nutritional yeast), real mugs for tea, plastic cups for soda, independent and classic films, environmental consciousness.
  • Dolores Park movie night: Free outdoor movie screenings, in Dolores Park, picnic style on the grass.

[edit] Miscellany

  • The Jejune Institute: This is either a cult, a complicated scavenger hunt posing as a cult, or a brilliant satire of a cult posing as a complicated scavenger hunt posing as a cult. At any rate, it's extremely cheap entertainment, and if you're interested in pursuing a day of choreographed high weirdness while exploring the city, try it out. More info, and some spoilers, at Yelp.
  • 826 Valencia A writing center for kids 6-17. More importantly, it's also the Bay Area's only independent pirate supply store. Knocks Captain Rick's Booty Cove face-down in the mud. Remember, do not threaten the mops.

[edit] Further reading

  • Fun Cheap is how I plan my weekends. There is so much to do here for free or cheap, might as well check here first before paying $24 for 2 people to see a movie, when you could see a free movie in the park or book reading, or spend $10 for some great music.
  • Yelp User reviews of entertainment, businesses, restaurants and more.
