[edit] Bookstores
Great bookstores (with description, location, links if possible):
- Borderlands: specialty sci-fi and fantasy bookstore in the mission with knowledgeable staff, and great staff picks. http://www.borderlands-books.com/
- Modern Times: political bookstore in the mission http://www.mtbs.com/
- Green Apple Books: used bookstore in the Richmond. Hands down my favorite store ever. They have tons of used books, some free too. They also sell new books in case you're wanting a current bestseller. I could spend the day here. http://www.greenapplebooks.com/cgi-bin/mergatroid/index.html
- Red Hill Books, Bernal Heights. A lovely and friendly used book store on Cortland Ave in Bernals Heights. Affiliated with Dog Eared Books in the Mission and Phoenix Books in Noe Valley http://www.dogearedbooks.com/redhill/news.php
- Dog Eared Books, 900 Valencia, Mission. Another great, friendly used-books store. http://www.dogearedbooks.com/dogeared/index.php
- Phoenix Books, 3957 24th St, Noe Valley. Same owners as Red Hill Books and Dog Eared Books -- both of which are great. http://www.dogearedbooks.com/phoenix/index.php
- Omnivore Books, 3885 Cesar Chavez St, Mission/Noe. This is a really unique and friendly small book store that only stocks cookbooks and food writing. They also have a lot of events and activities (like a pie baking contest a few weeks ago! yum!) http://omnivorebooks.com/
- City Lights Bookstore, 261 Columbus Ave, North Beach. One of SF's most famous and loved book stores, a favorite of the Beats. http://www.citylights.com/
- Browsers Bookstore, 2195 Fillmore Street, Pacific Heights. A long time small, indy bookstore, good staff, good hours. http://www.browserbooksonline.com
